當越來越多人使用掃地機器人，隨之而來也有很多負面評價，比如隨機式的清掃系統，其走位會遺漏很多區域。 2008~2010 年為本案技術革新的 階段，不少公司開始研究規劃式掃地機器人。
最開始是想讓掃地機可以看到房間的佈局情況，然後可以使清掃減少遺漏。所以它的核心技術是「攝像頭定位」，用攝像頭掃描周圍的環境，結合「紅外傳感器」，通過拍攝的畫面和一定的算法來進行導航。
攝像頭定位系統算是解決「覆蓋清掃率」較好的方法，但由於還是受光線影響，在昏暗環境效果不好，同時造價太高無法大規模普及。
